Father's Day (1977) was the first in a series of Boxing paintings where Cenedella uses humor to mask the underlying meaning of the painting.

While conceptualizing the piece in June 1977, the month in which Father's Day takes place, Cenedella originally meant to use two regular Boxers going at it in the ring. As he began sketching out the image on paper, he slowly realized that he was subconsciously drawing his two father's beating each other up as middle aged Boxers. Russ Spiers in the yellow trunks (Cenedella's biological father) takes a mean right hook from Robert Cenedella Sr. (Cenedella's father who raised him) in this therapy on canvas piece.
