"When The Giants was first shown in New York I remember a woman standing in front of it with a puzzled look on her face. I imagined she was trying to grasp the incorrect perspective, the colossal fans and the small players. Anyway, her son gave her a poke and said, ‘Mom, don’t you get it ...The fans are the GIANTS!’ After a pause, she said, ‘Oh, right, I see.’ Then she smiled and congratulated her eight-year-old son for pointing out the pun.
Others who looked and wrote about the work took it a bit more seriously, noting that a lot of the anger and violence in sports is generated more by the fans than the players.
Although a major part of my work appears to be about making people laugh, or at least about seeing and showing humor in situations (even the most ugly or sad), my real concern about life is rather serious.
