Robert Cenedella's 1992 painting, Yellow Ribbons, is a jingoistic fervor showing some segments of society around him. Cenedella painted this in response to the 1991 invasion of Kuwait by Saddam Hussein, the launching of the First Gulf War, and the proclamation of "a new world order" by President George Bush Sr., which launched many street protests for and against the war.
In a May 2003 issue of Art Business News two images of Yellow Ribbons were reproduced, side by side with a photograph of Pablo Picasso's Guernica (1937).
In the accompanying article titled "Art At War," Cenedella says: "You take a lonely path as an artist when you are a social commentator... My role is the same whether we're at war or we're at peace, but I felt an urgency to paint Yellow Ribbons during Desert Storm."
