Painted in 1962, Cenedella made this painting as a tribute to his late mentor, George Grosz. In this painting, you will notice imageries from Grosz's own works, which are meant to be symbolic as they reflected on Grosz's plight while living in America. In 1933, Grosz left Germany and fled to America during the uprising of Hitler's Nazi Germany. But in 1959, Grosz returned home to Germany with his wife. Shortly thereafter, rumor has it that Grosz either drunkenly fell down the stairs breaking his neck, or that he was pushed down the stairs by Nazi loyalists. Regardless of what happened, you will notice Grosz at the bottom left portion of the painting, where he lays stagnantly at the bottom of a staircase.
