Battlefield of Energy (1980) was painted in response to several manufactured oil crises in the 1970s. In the 1979-1980 oil crisis under the 39th President of the United States, Jimmy Carter, dependence on OPEC oil became unsustainable at $40/barrel due to the Iranian Revolution and the Iran-Iraq War disrupting regional stability and global oil supplies. This ultimately led to a shift in energy alternatives with research into the use of coal, natural gas, and nuclear power; however, oil still remains a top energy source to this day.

Cenedella depicts Big Oil and other Fortune 500 companies taking advantage of the situation and showing the chaos that ensued. The issue of oil is just as significant today as it was 40+ years ago. Once again, fantasy has become a reality as history repeats itself.
